ABOUT
Lung cancer incidence is rising in India and
world- wide. Despite early detection the overall
outcome for lung cancer has not changed much over
the years. The need is therefore to look into
the causes of this cancer so that preventive measures
can be adopted at the community level. Tobacco
smoking remains the single most important risk
factor for development of lung cancer especially
in males. Limited Indian studies have also shown
tobacco smoking as the leading cause, though other
factors which have come into focus lately are
the role of indoor and outdoor air pollution,
micro-nutrients in diet and the occupational exposures.
Lung cancer in this aspect can be labeled as a
preventable disease.
The Indian Society for Study of Lung Cancer is
committed to bring together dedicated physicians,
oncologists, public health workers, social activists
and volunteers to a common platform to fight the
increasing menace of lung cancer in India. We
have made a modest beginning and we dream of building
a powerful society that can make an impact at
the community and administrative level, besides
providing holistic support to patients of lung
cancer. The ISSLC is focused on preventing lung
cancer by promoting research, education, co-operation
and mutual understanding among all those interested
in this area. We have just begun with the ISSLC.
The society is still in its infancy. The major
tasks are fundraising and membership.
